# Toolchains (/docs/toolchains)



Vanish workers run Amazon Linux. When your command needs more than the base worker provides, install system packages for a Run, or bake a reusable toolchain:

Package names must exist for the worker's operating system and architecture. Baking runs the installer once on a worker and keeps what it wrote; later Runs mount the toolchain instead of installing again. A toolchain records the architecture and base image it was baked for. Install scripts run on the worker with network access, so review the scripts you choose.

Baking uses managed compute and credits like any Run. Dependency directories in your tree can hold macOS binaries, which do not run on Linux; install Linux dependencies in a toolchain instead.
